Have you ever awakened and wondered why your jaw is sore or why you have a headache? If so, you may be suffering from a condition known as bruxism. Bruxism is a common condition that affects up to 1/3 of Americans. So, what is bruxism, and what can your Los Gatos dentist do to help you treat it? Keep reading for more information about this misunderstood dental condition.

What Is Bruxism?

By definition, bruxism is when you clench your jaw or grind and clench your teeth. Some people do this during the day, while others clench their teeth while sleeping. Either way, it can cause health issues and damage to your teeth, so learning to manage and overcome the condition is essential.

Causes of Bruxism

Although the causes of bruxism vary from person to person, various physical, genetic, or psychological factors are believed to contribute to the condition.

Daytime Clenching

If you clench your teeth during the day, the leading causes of bruxism are usually associated with tension, stress, or anxiety. Unfortunately, even in less stressful times, you may continue the habit.

Nighttime Grinding

If you grind your teeth while sleeping, it could mean you suffer from hyperactivity, acid reflux, or sleep apnea. In addition, if you use tobacco, alcohol, or consume too much caffeine, it could exacerbate the problem.

Treatment Options

If you are suffering from bruxism, we may suggest the following treatment:

Sleep Study

If we suspect you might be suffering from sleep apnea, a sleep study can help. Treating your sleep apnea can, in turn, help alleviate your bruxism symptoms.

Nightguard

We can create a mouthguard for you to wear while you’re sleeping; this mouthguard can keep you from damaging your teeth.

Relaxation

If your bruxism is stress-related, we can work with you on relaxation techniques to alleviate your symptoms.
